I’m enjoying Pastor Bradford’s overview of Revelation. Revelation must be difficult for a pastor to teach since so many interpretations have been offered. In the early and mid 20th century, a pastor could invite his people to follow along in their Scofield Reference Bibles since this was such the popular and dominant interpretation. But in the last 20 years or so, the Scofield System of Bible interpretation has not been recommended by Christian colleges and seminaries. Pastor Bradford has demonstrated gentle wisdom in his approach by saying, “The details are difficult but the message is unmistakable”. He pays tribute some the elements of the Scofield system yet is preaching the benefits of a careful approach to symbolic interpretation . The result is that the powerful symbols in Revelation can have rich spiritual application to any reader or hearer of any age; from John’s original first century audience to those who live to see Christ’s return. Bradford recognizes the apocalyptic and visionary style of communication used in Revelation and wisely cautions us interpret it symbolically rather than using the “literal if possible” method which created so much sensationalism in the 20th century.
